The Trust was set up by 8 men and women in memory of Clive West following his death in August 2014. The Trustees are anxious to continue Clive’s vision and passion for teaching and preaching the word of God particularly within the Church of Ireland context. In order to fulfil this aspiration, the trustees decided to do two things:

In order to fulfil this aspiration, the trustees decided to do two things:
1. To host an annual lecture on a biblical/theological subject close to Clive’s heart.

2. To set up a fund to provide finance and support for excellent Biblical and theological training for those called by God to ministry within the Church of Ireland.

The launching by Harold Miller, Bishop of Down and Dromore, took place in February 2016 in All Saints’ Church, Belfast. The Archbishop of Armagh and the Bishop of Connor also took part. The lecture on “The faith at the heart of the Book of Common Prayer” was given by the Rev Dr Ashley Null, now Bishop of Tunisia. The evening was chaired by Trevor Johnston, chairman of the trustee group. Many of you were with us on that occasion and have continued to show your interest and support. We, as trustees, are anxious to thank you and inform you about the progress and activity of the Trust since then.

Since 2014, we have financially supported almost a dozen couples who have trained at leading theological colleges in London and Sydney. Each of these are now serving in ordained ministry or finishing up their theological studies.

In September 2024, desiring to strengthen local churches, the West Trust launched the Ministry Training Academy (MTA) to provide ongoing theological education for lay Christians, especially the young, to strengthen those engaged in ministry and provide further encouragement towards vocation.

What's next?
Alongside growing the existing MTA programme, including conferences and training events across Northern Ireland, we hope, under God, to establish the West Theological Centre (WTC), a physical hub for further study of the Bible, Doctrine, Church History, and Christian Ministry.
